40 Days of Positivity

June 27th, 2014 marked the end of my “40 Days of Positivity” social media campaign, using the hashtag #40DaysOfPositivity.

Why 40 days? Because I believe that if you want to turn something into a habit, then you must do it consistently for at least 40 days. The basic idea is that it takes a long time for a good habit to really sink in and becomes second nature to us.

Cultivating good habits require effort, time, and patience.

The inspiration to start this campaign started when I realized that there are a lot of negativity on the internet, especially in social media sites – people arguing, complaining, spreading rumours, and the like.

I don’t want to hop onto the same bandwagon, so I decided to make this campaign. Mostly it was for myself, so that I can be more positive on the internet but it turned out to be beneficial for others as well. Many are doing their own #40DaysOfPositivity. So that’s good to know.

I posted these messages on my Facebook and Twitter accounts. The Twitter tweets were summaries of what I posted on Facebook. So here, I will post all 40 days worth of positive messages, as posted on my Facebook page.

Day 1: May 19th, 2014

An individual, whoever he or she may be, is like a goldmine.

The thing about gold is that it doesn’t just lie around on the surface. You have to go looking for it. Dig and dig deep. Our task is not to see if there is gold or not. Our task is to find it, believing that it is there – waiting to be discovered.

You are a goldmine.

Confidence starts from believing in yourself. If you believe you can or you can’t, then you are probably right.

Believe. Try. Improve.

Day 2: May 20th, 2014

You need to know that it is okay to make mistakes. You should definitely try your best to avoid mistakes, but know that when you do make them, it is okay.

To err is human – learn from mistakes, move on in life, and improve your state.

The question is not whether or not you will fall, because falling is inevitable. The question is whether or not you will get back up, because getting back up is a choice.

Day 3: May 21st, 2014

There is only one chance to live life, with many second chances to improve how you live it. If you can still breathe, then you can still change your state into a better state.

If you can read this Facebook status, then there is a second chance for you.

Take it.

Day 4: May 22nd, 2014

If you don’t like where you are, then move. You are not a tree. You have the power to choose. Choose wisely.

Day 5: May 23rd, 2014

God will not burden a soul more than it can bear.

In other words, God knows that you are strong enough to face whatever challenges that come your way.

You are strong enough.

Day 6: May 24th, 2014

There are many others, but there is only one you. You are original.

Be you, and be the best version of you that you can be.

Day 7: May 25th, 2014

Words hurt, but the scar doesn’t have to be there unless you allow it. You can’t control the words that come out of people’s mouths, but you can control how you react to them.

You have more power over your emotions than you think.

Day 8: May 26th, 2014

Serving and helping other people is the ultimate therapy for the brokenhearted and the ultimate recipe for a happy life. You start to realize that life is much bigger than me, myself, and I.

The best way to brighten up your day is to brighten up someone else’s day.

Day 9: May 27th, 2014

Grudges are like heavy bags that you carry. They will make it harder for you to move forward. Let go of the heavy burden so that you will be able to move on swiftly.

You don’t necessarily have to forget, but you have to learn to forgive. It is good for you.

Let it go.

Day 10: May 28th, 2014

Every group of people has some bad apples in them, whether it be a religious group, a race, a school, a country, etc. Some bad apples is not the whole group. An act of the few doesn’t define the whole.

Choose to focus on the good apples and get to know them a bit more.

Why take a bite out of one bad apple? You’ll get sick.

Day 11: May 29th, 2014

Never underestimate any good deed, even if it is tiny. One small act of kindness can change someone’s life.

Day 12: May 30th, 2014

Human beings are short-sighted by nature, we can’t see very far. What we can see is what is close to us. What we see as good for us might be bad for us in the long run. What we see as bad for us might be good for us in the long run.

The key is to choose what is right with God. If He is pleased with us, then our future will be good, no matter what. His Sight isn’t limited like ours. He knows what our future looks like.

Have faith, keep the faith, and think good of Him. He can surprise you with goodness beyond your imagination.

Day 13: May 31st, 2014

Sometimes difficult things in life are easier (but still difficult) if you change your perspective about them. Instead of viewing difficult things in life as problems, view them as challenges.

Challenges are more interesting.

The way you view life does matter.

Day 14: June 1st, 2014

If you don’t make mistakes, then you are either an angel or you are dead.

I am sure you are neither.

Don’t fear mistakes. Fear cowardice – not having the courage to try.

Day 15: June 2nd, 2014

Travel, observe, and learn.

Discover the world that is bigger than yourself, and feel humble.

The more you know, the more you realize how much you don’t know.

Day 16: June 3rd, 2014

To be in a positive state doesn’t mean that you disregard all the negatives that are there – that’s denial. To be in a positive state means that you consciously choose to focus on the good in yourself, in others, and in the world.

You choose to enhance and highlight the good, while keeping in mind the existence of the bad. You just don’t dwell in the negative.

Positive and negative cannot coexist in one body. You can’t be an honest person and a liar at the same time. You are either one or the other. When one is there, the other disappears.

Focus, enhance, and highlight the positive, and the negative will eventually disappear.

Day 17: June 4th, 2014

One of the amazing things about the existence of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is that he demonstrated what every human being can become.

What you can become.

Day 18: June 5th, 2014

Hardship is never a reason not to smile.

The Prophet faced some of the worst hardships, and yet he smiled. One companion said whenever he saw the Prophet, a smile was always on the Prophet’s face.

So smile. If anything, a smile may lessen your hardship.

Day 19: June 6th, 2014

You will eventually find what you ultimately seek, whether consciously or unconsciously.

If you seek good, then you will eventually find good.

Seek, seize, and repeat.

Day 20: June 7th, 2014

Be patient in times of hardship, be grateful in times of ease, and be consistent in changing your state to a better state.

All your life affairs, no matter what it is, will be good.

Day 21: June 8th, 2014

Uselessness is a human creation.

You are not born useless. You are not useless, unless you believe yourself to be.

Day 22: June 9th, 2014

Nurture strong roots within yourself and you will not be shaken. You will be the source of good influence, not the target of bad influence.

Day 23: June 10th, 2014

The strongest is the one who can withhold an outburst of anger in the heat of the moment. The strongest is the one who can carve a sincere smile in times of difficulty. The strongest is the one who can forgive those who did the most unthinkable of crimes.

You are strong enough to be among the strongest. You just might need a few “weight lifting sessions”.

Day 24: June 11th, 2014

Positivity is contagious. If you hang around with positive people, eventually you will become positive as well.

If you are yourself positive, you will radiate positivity to others.

Day 25: June 12th, 2014

The ego only seeks what is best for itself. It seeks pleasure for the sake of it. It doesn’t care about anything or anyone else.

It talks a lot too. Silence the ego and listen to your heart.

Somewhere in your heart there is a voice of conscience that comes from a pure source.

Listen to it. Follow it.

Day 26: June 13th, 2014

A picture is made of many pixels. But, you don’t focus on the pixels. You focus on the picture. If what you are seeing are pixels, then maybe you are staring too close into the picture.

Take a step back and see the bigger picture. It’s more beautiful than a bunch of pixels.

Day 27: June 14th, 2014

To attach yourself to this temporary means to attach yourself to a branch that is destined to break.

Attach yourself to the eternal. You will never break.

Day 28: June 15th, 2014

Passion can be innate or acquired. Whichever it is, find and follow your passion. Make a living and serve people by doing what you love doing.

Otherwise, you are not really living, despite the size of your paycheck.

Money buys momentary happiness, not enduring happiness.

Day 29: June 16th, 2014

Between fire and water, one that is more in amount will overcome the other. A house on fire can’t be put out with a cup of water. But a town on fire can be put out with a wave from the ocean.

To wipe out the negative, emphasize on the positive. Fight a big fire with a bigger amount of water. Don’t fight fire with fire.

When you have an ocean of positivity, the fire of negativity will be extinguished.

Day 30: June 17th, 2014

There is not just one road to your success – there are many.

When one road is blocked, there are other roads available and all of them have the potential to lead you to your success, though some roads might be longer and harder.

Just recalculate your GPS and find another road. Don’t cry over a roadblock when you can use that time to find a better road.

Keep on driving.

Day 31: June 18th, 2014

To fall is inevitable, but to rise is a choice.

Day 32: June 19th, 2014

See beauty in the simplest of things.

Day 33: June 20th, 2014

“If you fell down yesterday, stand up today.” – H. G. Wells

Day 34: June 21st, 2014

Learn from the past. Live in the present. Hope for the future.

Day 35: June 22nd, 2014

It’s okay it you can’t do everything. God prefers acts that are small but consistent, as opposed to acts that are big but inconsistent.

If you can’t do it all, don’t leave it all.

Day 36: June 23rd, 2014

Success shouldn’t be defined by how high your grades are or how much money you make.

Success should be defined by how many lives you touched, how much contentment you gained, and how close you are to your Creator.

Day 37: June 24th, 2014

Find contentment in having less of this world and more of the next world.

Everything about this world is temporary. Your grades are temporary, your money is temporary, your car is temporary, your house is temporary, your gadgets are temporary, and even your loved ones are temporary.

Manage and balance out your attachment. You can be attached to this world, but don’t be too attached because attachment to the temporary is temporary. Learn to let them go, when the time comes.

Let go of the ephemeral, hold on to the eternal.

This world will end. The next world won’t.

Day 38: June 25th, 2014

Life in the fast lane is blurry. You don’t see things clearly and you might miss some important things along the way.

Learn to slow down and appreciate the little pleasures of life, like the color of the grass, the coolness of the wind, the songs of the birds, the dance of the clouds, the smile of the elders, the roof above our heads, and the loved ones we have in our sight.

You don’t want to be looking for them when they’re already gone.

Day 39: June 26th, 2014

You are more worthy than you might think. The fact that you exist means that you are valuable to the world.

The world needs something that you have in you, whether you realize it or not.

You are not useless, unless you believe you are.

Day 40: June 27th, 2014

Do not underestimate the power of your perception; how you view your world.

Your world can change if you view it differently.

Your perception shapes your world. If you view it negatively, your world becomes negative. If you view it positively, your world becomes positive.

Choosing one view doesn’t mean you ignore the other view. You just choose to focus more on one, and less on the other.

There is a positive and a negative in almost every situation. When life gives you lemons, you can either squeeze the sour juice or make them into sweet lemonades.

You choose.
